Changing Weather + Weathering Change

There's a saying in St. Louis about the weather that goes something like this:  If you don't like the weather, don't worry, it will change soon. And is that ever true.

Yesterday at lunch time it was 69 degrees. We contemplated eating lunch on the deck because it was so lovely out. Later that afternoon, by the time the kids got off the bus, it was freezing cold and snowing! That evening, right before bed, it was a windy, blustery 16 degrees.

Can you believe it? If you live anywhere near St. Louis…you can believe it because you experienced it, too. But if not…let me recap:

A 53 degree change in temperature in just one day!

It's funny…dramatic change in the weather in a single day is noteworthy. (At least I think it is.) Something to blog about. Something to chat about with the checkout lady at Target. Something to really step back and take notice of.

Yet so often, when it comes to creating change in our lives, we *expect* radical change like this. We expect change to happen overnight…better yet in the next three hours, thank you very much.

If you're feeling a bit disheartened today, with January drawing to an end, that you haven't lost those pounds of clutter that you resolved to lose at the start of the year, remember this:

Creating lasting change is a gradual process.

Give yourself permission to create change gradually. Keep your attention on the subtle improvements and the progress you're making. Really step back and notice these small, subtle changes. Little by little, you'll weather the process of change, and see dramatic results in the long run.
