Organizing for the Holidays

The organizer in me likes to plan ahead for the holiday season. Like really ahead. Say August and September.   You might be chuckling but before you hit your delete key think about the things that stress you out in December, preventing you from enjoying your holidays. Usually you're stressed because you have too much to do.   I love being able to relax and enjoy December but if I'm trying to cram in lots of extra things there's no way I'm going to be at peace.    If you normally send greeting cards in December, this is the perfect time to plan that project....

Staying Untangled!

I recently ran across a box in which my hubby had placed a mess of cords. They belonged to our camera, my PDA, our three computers, video camera, dvd player, etc. You've probably got the same ones at your house. Right?   I love having all of these cords in one place. It sure beats having them mysteriously appear in drawers, file cabinets, and other out-of-the-way storage spaces.    When storing electronic cords together, be sure to label each cord as to what it belongs to. A simple piece of masking tape, a mailing label or label maker all work great for labeling....

Two for one – Establishing a new habit of purging

I recently conducted a survey in which 30% of the respondents reported that closets and storage areas were their #1 priority to get organized in the home.     Some people complain they don't have enough storage while others admit they have plenty but just mis-manage it. Our clients are always amazed at the storage they indeed have once we've sorted and purged their current contents.    From this point forward, try this new exercise. For every new item you bring into the house – clothes, accessories, dιcor, tools, etc. – donate or toss two items. Imagine the space...

Back to School – Welcome Routines!

Okay, let's be honest. Some of us could hardly wait for back-to-school time to arrive. Right? Don't get me wrong. I love summer and the freedoms that come with it. No need to be checking on things like car pools, music practice, and homework projects.   My two kids are seniors this fall – one in college and one in high school. Needless to say, this is a very exciting year for both of them. My son remarked a few weeks ago that he needed to start getting to bed a little earlier so he wouldn't have such a tough time once school started again. Yeah – I think some of my teaching has paid...

Keeping track of Time

Now that it's school time again our days seem a little more "scheduled" and a little less "free". Kids can no longer sleep in and there are once again car pools to drive and places to be before that bell rings.   As your child begins to bring home papers from school, no doubt there will be things to make note of on the Family Calendar. The question is: Do you have a calendar or method of keeping track of everyone and their commitments?    Wall Calendars – These may seem old fashioned but they work. If you like this method, be sure to get one with extra writing space in...

Finding more time at home

My hubby Tony is often surprised at how much I'm able to get done at home while also managing a full-time job running my own consulting business. Here are a few things that have helped me over the years to get the most out of my time.

  • Run errands once a week versus whenever something arises. This will save time and gas.  Many of us have the same errands week in and week out. Mine include: bank, dry cleaners, library, groceries and Target.
  • Plan out your meals for 1-2 weeks and then grocery shop the plan. This cuts down on last-minute trips to the store or fast food...

Organized for Healthy Eating

I've always told my family that whenever we can avoid surprises in our schedules we avoid last-minute stress. I think that same philosophy can be applied to eating a more healthy diet.  If I plan ahead of time to have plenty of fruits and veggies on hand, then I tend to eat less sugary snacks. Here are a few tips in making sure you eat your fruits and veggies:

  1. As soon as you get home from the grocery store, wash your fruit right away. This way when you need a quick snack, it'll be ready to go.
  2. Put one day's worth of fruit in a bowl...

Getting Johnny and Suzie to Eat

Although my kids are nearly out of the nest, it seems like yesterday that we were teaching them common table manners such as asking for things to be passed to them versus standing on their chairs and reaching across for something they wanted.   When I speak to parent groups I often field questions on finicky and picky eaters and how to prevent them from visiting your home. In my What's for Dinner? DVD and...

Back to School Already!

Gosh – where did the summer go??!!! If you've got school-age kids returning to school, you're either elated or bummed. My kids are both seniors this fall – one in college and one in high school. When they were younger, my husband and I tried implementing some of the following tips in order to give them the best re-entry into a new school year:

  • Get them accustomed to their new schedules a few weeks before school starts. This might be challenging if they're used to staying up late or at least until it's dark out.
  • For kids 10 or older, have them get up on their...

On-the-go Organization

One of my favorite organizing tools is the Collapsible Crate. I keep one in the trunk of my car at all times as it comes in handy so often. Many people will stack items by the back door so they'll remember to take them when it's time to run errands. I like to fill my crate as items surface, cutting down on back door clutter but also helping me to remember everything. Crate-friendly items might include:  library materials needing to be returned, dry cleaning or store returns.   Putting items in the crate will prevent them from rolling around...
