Try Something New, Without Creating Any Clutter.

If there's one thing to get you out of a scrapbooking rut it's a trip to your favorite scrapbook retailer. Just one glance at the new products and your creative juices start flowing like a river. Know what I mean?   We all need new supplies from time to time (and yes I realize this is truly a *need.*) But what if there were another way out of a scrapbooking rut? That would be great, wouldn't it? Just think of all that time you'd save over shopping for supplies and finding a home for all those new goodies in your stash. You could spend that time scrapbooking instead! (How's that for added incentive?)   Alright. Here we go…three clutter-free cures for a scrapbook rut.   Try a new approach to...

Changing Weather + Weathering Change

There's a saying in St. Louis about the weather that goes something like this:  If you don't like the weather, don't worry, it will change soon. And is that ever true.   Yesterday at lunch time it was 69 degrees. We contemplated eating lunch on the deck because it was so lovely out. Later that afternoon, by the time the kids got off the bus, it was freezing cold and snowing! That evening, right before bed, it was a windy, blustery 16 degrees.   Can you believe it? If you live anywhere near St. Louis…you can believe it because you experienced it, too. But if not…let me recap:   A 53 degree change in temperature in just one day!   It's funny…dramatic change in the weather in a single day...

Embrace the White Space

As you may know, I dabble in scrapbooking a bit. I'm no scrapbook design genius, but I love to study the pages of the design geniuses. I love understanding what the scrapbook designer has done and trying to figure out what makes her pages work. One of my favorite scrapbookers is Cathy Zielske the author of Clean and Simple Scrapbooking. Her pages are clean and simple, with consistent margins...

Creative Storage Solutions for Scrapbook Supplies

I'm a big advocate of use-what-you-have organizing. Using on-hand containers will not only save you some cash, but it can also help you create a one-of-a-kind space, loaded with inspiration and fun. In my space, for example, I converted a ceramic tray and nine ceramic votive holders to store my metal attachments. I also use a wooden lazy Susan plus a variety of mason jars, white soup bowls and white beans to keep my often used supplies close at hand.   When you seek out storage solutions, either by shopping at home or at your local retailer, remember to buy containers for specific items. It works best if you know what you need to store, the dimension of your items, and how many items you need to store, before buying a container...

scrapbooking resolutions

I love a New Year. There's something so energizing about the clean slate the New Year offers us—new beginnings and fresh starts ripe with possibility.   One of my favorite New Year traditions is the New Year resolution. I know lots of people don't share my adoration for the good ol' resolution. They think "What's the point. I usually forget about my resolution by the end of January anyway."   Here's something to keep in mind. It takes a minimum of 21 days to create a new habit. A resolution is a habit. So if you aren't habitually drinking 64 ounces of water, eating five servings of fruits and veggies, doing your daily declutter, or remembering to do any of your other resolutions yet—it's OK! It...

'Twas the Night After Christmas

'Twas the Night After Christmas
by Aby Garvey   'Twas the night after Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a thing was away, not even my new blouse.
The stockings were thrown by the chimney without care,
And knickknacks and gadgets were strewn everywhere.   The gift wrap was scattered. The boxes were strewn.
I gasped as I looked all around the trashed room.
What was I thinking, when I bought all this stuff?
Why didn't I realize ten gifts were enough?   The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of organization danced in my head.
"But where should I start?" I wondered inside, ...

Scrapbooking with a Deadline?

It seems a bit counter-intuitive, doesn't it? The words "scrapbooking" and "deadline" in the same sentence, just doesn't seem to make sense—on the surface anyway. Scrapbooking is a hobby. It's supposed to be fun, stress-free, and in fact for many, a stress-release. Deadlines, on the other hand, are associated with work, pressure, and stress. "I've got a deadline to meet!" You can just feel the stress in that sentence.   But deadlines—setting them and hitting them—are an important part of being organized. Organizing for scrapbooking is just the same. Deadlines serve a very useful purpose and can, in fact, reduce stress and make scrapbooking more fun. When you have a deadline for a scrapbook project, and you look for...

the power of limits

I was browsing at Target yesterday, when I stumbled upon the clearance rack. (What women isn't attracted to the clearance rack like a bug to a bright light? Not this one, that's for sure.) While perusing the sale items, I suddenly realized I was in the maternity section. I reminisced about that blissful time: pregnancy. Oh, sure, anticipating the arrival of my baby was blissful…but what I'm really talking about was the blissful simplicity of my maternity wardrobe.   Choices were limited.   Decisions were simple.   Life was easier.   All because of limits.   With my maternity wardrobe I didn't overbuy…I knew being pregnant was a short term proposition. So I loaded up on basic wardrobe...

With a few organizing (and simplifying!) strategies, coupled with simplified approach to scrapbooking, you can have your (holiday fruit) cake and scrapbook, too. (You thought I was going to say "eat it, too," didn't you? I know you did. But does anyone actually eat fruit cake?)   I digress—back to simplifying for the sake of scrapbooking during the holidays. Here are some ideas:   Scrapbook with friends. The holidays are a great time to get together with friends. Why not have a get together with your...
