The "boob tube," the "idiot-box" -- we have such loving nicknames for the television. And yet we are still glued to it! We are BOMBARDED with commercials, bits of information, images, sound bites, and noise -- and we wonder why Americans have such short attention spans! So many people tell me they have more to do than they can fit into a 24-hour day -- yet they spend 1/8 to 1/4 of it in front of the television. Spend a week WITHOUT it -- you might even find time to read a book, play with your kids, or start a new hobby. Who knows -- you might like it so much that you toss the darned thing out the WINDOW. Nah, that's probably asking too much!
Make a list of all the things you would like to do, if only you had more TIME -- hobbies, projects to finish, sights to see, people to visit. Pick one activity from your list for each day of your week without television. That's the real definition of quality time.
Add up how much of your life is spent WATCHING television. If you watch 2 hours each evening and 8 hours over the the weekend, you watch 18 hours of television a week -- 936 hours per year -- 32,760 hours of television by the time you are 35.
Television is not entirely evil -- as long as you don't let it rule your life. Just like every aspect of getting your life in order, it's all about understanding your PRIORITIES. And if you absolutely can't miss a show, get a video recorder or Tivo and get a life!
