Hats off all of you small business OWNERS -- you have a very challenging job! I'll bet you had no idea what you were walking into when you struck out on your own. You have to be good at the thing you went into business to do, but you also have to JUGGLE a number of other roles -- marketer, file clerk, bookkeeper, secretary, ombudsman, product developer, visionary -- you name it! And things can seem a little OVERWHELMING -- even if you have help, you still bear final responsibility for your business. This month, we offer a few suggestions that will make it easier for you to stay on top of everything while you live the American dream.

Some Practical Organizing Tips...

The only STRUCTURE your small business will have is what you create. Lay your policies and procedures down on paper. Taking a look at how you do what you do will help you see gaps in your processes and possible improvements.

Just because you have decided to "go it alone" doesn't mean that you have to do everything yourself. Even if you don't have full-time employees, you should assemble a TEAM of contract professionals to guide you in your business dealings.

How can you be your company's VISIONARY -- if you are always putting out fires? Make uninterrupted some time in your week for long-term projects -- marketing, product development, planning -- and treat that time as though it were sacred (it is!)
