It used to be that anyone who couldn't stay organized, was easily DISTRACTED, and tended to be overly energetic was looked down upon. Children were labeled "problems" and adults were thought to be lost causes. But today, we realize that there is an organic brain condition that causes some people to think and function DIFFERENTLY than most of the population. We also know that these people aren't crazy or wrong -- and that they are often the most creative and intelligent folks around, when put in a supportive environment. So this month, let's learn a bit more about Attention Deficit Disorder -- otherwise known as ADD to the general public.
Attention Deficit folks thrive in a STRUCTURED environment. Set up simple systems for completing daily tasks. Get accustomed to following routines -- when getting ready in the morning, cleaning the house, or finishing up for the day at your office.
Give yourself lots of REMINDERS if you tend to forget appointments, get distracted, or lose your train of thought. Set an alarm on your watch, put up a sticky note, and make a running list of to-do's in a single notebook that you keep with you.
Cut yourself some slack! Don't focus on the 23,000 things you haven't done yet. Instead, tally up the things you have ACCOMPLISHED today. You deserve a pat on the back -- and the rest of your to-do list will still be there waiting for you tomorrow.
