Taking Moving Expense Deductions

ELIGIBLE IF...

  • new job is 50+ miles farther from home than old one was
  • expenses are incurred within one year from date you start new job
  • you are working full-time (39 weeks in the year)
  • no time requirement if first job 50+ miles from home
  • no time requirement if lost job through no fault of your own
  • no time requirement if transferred by employer
  • no time requirement if returning to US from abroad upon retirement
  • no time requirement if new job with armed forces
  • no time requirement if permanent station change with armed forces

MAY DEDUCT EXPENSES FOR...

  • mileage or gas and oil costs for using your own car in the move
  • disconnecting and re-connecting / transferring your utilities
  • transportation and lodging for you and family members
  • parking fees and tolls during the trip to your new home
  • packing and moving your household contents
  • up to 30 days cost of storing household belongings
  • expenses deducted directly from your adjusted gross income

MAY NOT DEDUCT EXPENSES FOR...

  • house-hunting trips
  • temporary living expenses
  • cost of selling your old home
  • cost of buying a new home
  • decorating expenses
