Keeping Safe While Away From Home

  • check your credit card policies and limits before traveling
  • buy traveler's checks
  • keep your wallet and currency in a front pocket or money belt
  • pay any bills that will come due while you are gone
  • keep receipts until credit card bill and bank drafts have cleared
  • don't take blank checks with you
  • be aware that some ATM cards cannot be used in foreign countries
  • know that credit card "charge back" policies are different overseas
  • use a credit card rather than an ATM card when traveling


  • carry your ID and medical info in case you get sick or injured
  • check your health insurance coverage before leaving
  • make sure your insurance covers illness away from home
  • find out the procedures for seeking care in another state or country
  • find out if you need additional vaccinations for your travels
  • start vaccination schedule early enough to be effective for your trip
  • wear long sleeves and use bug repellant if mosquitoes a problem
  • use bottled water and avoid ice cubes if local water questionable
  • avoid any foods washed in local unsafe water that aren't cooked
  • swim in chlorinated pools unless you know the water to be safe
  • eat raw fruits and vegetables only if you can peel them
  • bring minor first aid items, pain reliever, anti-diarrheal, etc.

  • don't take anything with you that you fear losing
  • don't take anything that you really don't need
  • leave behind unnecessary items in your wallet or purse
  • store valuables in hotel safe once you arrive
  • keep valuable documents and possessions close to you

  • make a list of the significant contents of each suitcase


  • let someone you trust know when you will be gone
  • suspend your subscription or have your newspapers picked up
  • don't leave a note for visitors -- leave a voice message
  • close and lock windows and doors
  • set timers on your lights and TV so the house appears occupied
  • suspend your mail delivery
  • leave drapes and shutters as you normally have them
  • have a neighbor accept package deliveries
  • inform the police and neighborhood watch that you will be gone
  • don't mention your being gone on your answering machine message
  • leave a car parked in your driveway
  • take instructions for retrieving your answering machine messages
  • set alarm system before leaving home
  • hire a house sitter to stay in your home
