Organize, Simplify And Transform Your Life

If you are planning to get your life in order during the new year, here are a few RESOLUTIONS to add to your list.
CREATE A HEALTHY HOME

De-clutter! There are so many reasons to remove CLUTTER from your life. It adds stress and can have negative health CONSEQUENCE. Excess clutter can collect dust, which can aggravate allergies. Piles of old newspapers can be mold magnets. Bedding which isnít washed frequently harbors dust mites. Dehumidifiers that arenít cleaned regularly will spew fungus into the air.
STRIVE TO STORE LIKE ITEMS TOGETHER

Create a central command CENTER where all family business is handled. Make a warranty and operating manual file. Set up a mail center. Have a launch and landing PAD, near your entry. Store things like your purse, cell phone and car keys in the same place every time.
START SMALL

Donít get overwhelmed. Start with a small MANAGEABLE project. Tackle your junk drawer. Go through your kitchen cupboards. Discover what lurks under the bed.
CLEAR YOUR CLOSET

Once it is cleaned out, consider having it outfitted with built in drawers and shelving. That will act as an INCENTIVE to help you keep it orderly.
MAINTAIN

Repeat this phrase to yourself. Make it your mantra: Pick it up. Put it BACK. Every time.
STREAMLINE YOUR SCHEDULE

Sit down and really think about all of the ACTIVITIES that you are involved in. Do you enjoy them? Are they enriching your life? Or are they making you feel stressed and harried? Act accordingly.
SET UP YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE NEW YEAR

Use only ONE calendar for your family. Color code activities. Write down birthdays and special events you want to remember throughout the year. Mark childrenís vacation and release days.
BE MINDFUL

Resolve to pay ATTENTION to what you are bringing into your house. Do you love it? Does it fill a need? Do you have a place to put it?
STOCK YOUR PANTRY

Buy enough groceries to have a few pantry meals on hand so you aren't always having to run out to the STORE at the last minute on busy days. Double-up on recipes and freeze them for busy days in the future.
REDISCOVER THE LIBRARY

Limit the amount of books that you purchase. BORROW the books that you will only read once. The library is also an excellent source for movies and music. Read magazines that you donít have a SUBSCRIPTION for. The library saves money and trees!
FIND TIME FOR YOURSELF

Build it into your SCHEDULE. If you are home with your kids, use naptime. If your kids are too old to nap, establish Quiet Time. Once my boys stopped napping, I taught them to spend one hour each afternoon, playing quietly in their room. Occasionally I had them watch a movie. Some days it was a long movie. If you are working outside the home, relax on your lunch break. Or arrange to have one night OFF every week. Meet a friend or just relax at home. Go for regular walks. It de-clutters your mind and relieves stress.
CELEBRATE YOUR LIFE

Stop waiting for SPECIAL occasions. Buy fresh flowers, bring out the special dishes on a Thursday night. Pull your treasures out of storage and display them where you can enjoy them. Light candles and play music while you dine.
BE PREPARED

Have a couple bottles of wine, cheese, crackers, nuts and olives on hand for the occasional DROP-IN guest.
SCHEDULE SOME TIME FOR A HOBBY

Remember that leisure activities reduce STRESS. Join a book club, a choir or scrapbook with friends.
MAKE A LIST OF 10 THINGS YOU WANT TO LEARN THIS YEAR

Make it fun. Here are a few to get you started:
  • learn to play pinochle
  • discover how to create a digital scrapbook
  • become proficient at using chopsticks
  • learn how to use one new piece of technology
Remember, learning keeps you YOUNG.
