     Getting Out Of Your Rut

"I do not seem to have anything going in my life, just the same cycle day in and day out. What can I do?"

- Divakar from Malaysia Many times when running a business, we find that we are just going through the motions -- doing the work put in front of us, but not really getting much enjoyment out of it. It's hard to get MOTIVATED and even harder to get excited about new projects. At times like this, it's important that you articulate your thoughts and feelings -- and it's even more important that you acknowledge your UNHAPPINESS. After all, you're being honest with yourself and not hiding behind an excuse.

The problem comes when we get stuck in a ROUTINE, without ever varying it. Many people see routines as tools for productivity, and that can be true. But I also consider routines to be COMFORT items. It becomes comfortable to do the same things every day because it's hard to see things any other way. After all, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" as they always say. Well I'm not one to agree with that phrase when you are obviously unhappy with the routine and it's causing you marital, health, and career stagnation.

I would recommend eliminating this "routine stagnation" by shocking the system. Do something that causes you to step OUTSIDE of your routine. It could be as simple as taking a walk during the middle of the work day (I'd bet something so simple like this would be quite unexpected!). Take up a hobby or try a new sport. Set yourself up in a different working ENVIRONMENT or switch your daily schedule around so it's backward. Fast for a day, eating only bread and water or try quitting smoking for a week. The whole point is to do something that you wouldn't consider normally. But whatever you choose, savor the change and allow that to encourage change in other areas, as well.

Another tip would be to surround yourself with successful, NON-ROUTINE people. Find people with higher energy levels challenge yourself to try to match their energy. Consider joining a business club or get more active with your religion. It's important to start meeting NEW people. You won't feel satisfied or fulfilled until you begin taking small steps outside of your routine. Just realize that you're not in on this alone. Share your feelings with your wife, family or co-workers and get them involved in the process. After all, if you have no support to improve from family or friends, you're less likely to.

You may find that you are having problems in your business -- you are working too many hours, ignoring your customers' needs, or making foolish mistakes. These issues are symptoms of an overall bigger PROBLEM. Are you bored or unhappy with your work? Is there a better business opportunity that you can be taking advantage of? Are you satisfied with your day-to-day routine? These are some important questions to ask yourself. The most important question, though, is the one that will force you to take ACTION: What are you willing to do about it?
