10 Reasons You Should be Lifting Weights Now
Spring's here officially and winter's cold and layers are (almost!) behind us. If removing those layers isn't enough reason to pick up the dumbbells, here are 10 more:
You will increase your strength. Strength training makes everyday activities like lifting boxes, your kids, and carrying groceries much easier and helps prevent injury.
You will lose fat. Each pound of muscle you gain can burn up to 50 extra calories a day and you can gain nearly 2 pounds of muscle in just 2 months by weight training 2 to 3 times per week. And you can lose 3 to 5 pounds of fat at the same time.
You will rev up your metabolism. Genetics and aging play a role in metabolism, but weight training can rev up even the slowest metabolism causing you to burn energy more efficiently and in less time.
You'll keep your bones healthy. Research shows that weight training can improve your bone mineral density by as much as 13% in just 6 months. This is critical for women as we age to minimize the risk of osteoporosis, especially in slender framed females.
You will improve your overall performance. Lifting on a regular basis will improve your overall performance in any sport activity and decrease your risk of injury. So whatever you enjoy doing – golfing, skiing, windsurfing or a little rollerblading – you'll do it better and safer.
You'll stay healthier. Weight training not only builds stronger muscles but increases joint stability by strengthening ligaments and tendons. Stronger joints prevent injury and eases pain associated with osteoarthritis.
It will strengthen your heart. Weight training increases your HDL – the "good" cholesterol – and lowers both your LDL – the "bad" cholesterol – and your blood pressure.
It helps reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Research shows that regular strength training can improve glucose utilization (which is the way the body processes sugar) in the body by 23% in just 4 months. This may reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Your age doesn't matter. Strength improvements are possible at ANY age. Studies have shown significant improvement and increase in bone density in individuals over 80 years old.
You'll feel better. Working out with weights improves your self esteem and your self confidence. A toned, fit body makes you feel great! Studies have shown a reduction in the symptoms of clinical depression and anxiety among individuals who weight train regularly.
